Californial Natural, Evo, Innova among the most trusted names in the natural pet food industry, have been sold to P&G, the transaction should close by end of June.

P&G’s 5/5/2010 press release: “This move enables P&G to expand into the attractive “holistic and naturals” segment of the pet food category, complementing P&G’s current Iams and Eukanuba brands and helping the Company advance its overall growth strategy of “reaching more consumers in more parts of the world more completely.”

P&G makes everything from Tide to Duracell batteries. Iams and Eukanuba are their only pet foods, mostly corn based formulas, and are sold in sold in grocery stores and box-chain pet stores. These brands are managed by their Health & Wellbeing Division, makers of Crest, Tampax, Oral-B, Fixodent, Scope, Vicks, Pringles.

Given industry labeling standards, ingredient quality changes may never become apparent until pets are affected. It is likely that a 4-6 month national supply of food will be available under current owner’s criteria, allowing pet parents to transition to other brands with little discomfort to cats and dogs.

Fortunately, there are many product lines that pets can choose over the next months and at lower cost. We suggest Acana, Orijen, Taste of The Wild for cats and dogs currently on Evo diets. Innova consumers are well served with Abady, Artemis, Blue Buffalo, and for pets with allergies and sensitive digestive systems, Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diets are a good alternative to California Natural.
